Using Cataract Surgery to Clear the Fog
Cataracts are a common condition that can develop for a variety of reasons. Patients who are noticing changes to their vision may want to undergo an evaluation to determine if cataracts are to blame. In most cases, patients who have cataracts will notice symptoms such as:
- Blurring and clouding vision
- Halos visible around lights
- Changes to colors seen
- Added light for reading
- Continued changes in their vision prescriptions
Cataracts can result in several problems with the lens inside the eye. They can cause partial to total blindness if they are not corrected in the earlier stages. Even though the condition often develops gradually over time, the results are serious if patients do not seek treatment.
Who is at risk of developing cataracts?
Cataracts do not discriminate. Patients of all genders, ages, and ethnicities are at risk of developing cataracts, though most patients who are diagnosed with this condition are adult, senior patients. There are certain factors that may contribute to the development of cataracts. This includes the use of certain medications and patients with conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, or diabetes. With routine examinations, many patients can catch problems early enough to successfully intervene with treatment.
How are cataracts treated?
The typical course of action for a patient who has been diagnosed with cataracts is continued monitoring until the condition progresses to the later stages. At this point, patients will be advised by their eye doctor to undergo cataract surgery. During this procedure, the natural eye lens is replaced with an artificial one. The lenses placed may include monofocal lenses or multifocal lenses. The lens chosen for a patient will be determined based on the patient’s unique condition.
